YOU

In MLM you constantly hear people talking about a downline, and building a matrix. So what are a downline and a matrix?

In the illustration above, YOU are the start of your own downline, or matrix. For purposes of this illustration, we will have a 2 wide matrix that is 3 levels deep. #1 and #2 are on your 1st level, and #3, #4, #5, and #6 are on your 2nd level, and #7 through #14 are on your 3rd level.

You make a purchase and become a distributor. That puts you at the top of your own sales organization which you will build. You make a sale, and that person becomes a distributor, just like you. They are placed on your first level. They will be #1 in the above illustration. Now you make a second sale -- that person becomes #2 in your organization, and is also on your first level.

Now the multiplication, or exponential growth, of your organization can kick in. Let's say you just made those two sales, and after training your two distributors about the product and how to market it, you have to visit relatives across the country and are out of touch for a while. But your #1 person duplicates you and makes a sale -- that sale becomes a distributor in your organization, and is #3 in the above illustration. He is on the 1st level of #1, but on YOUR 2nd level. You earn a commission on the product purchased by #3, as well as that purchased by #1 -- and you earned that commission because someone else was working in your group.

#1 makes another sale -- that person becomes #4 in the above illustration, and both you and #1 earn a commission. Your #2 person also makes 2 sales -- those people fall into your organization in positions #5 and #6 -- going under the person who referred them, and made the initial sale to them.

You made TWO sales, but because you trained your two new distributors and helped them get going, they EACH made TWO sales, and you now have SIX SALES and SIX DISTRIBUTORS in your organization.

In the perfect scenario, each person will sponsor two, who will fall into the downline right under the person who sponsored them -- and then those new people will sponsor two, etc. Of course, nothing ever works out in that perfect scenario.

Let's say that #4 is #1's mother, and she is in the business just to help her daughter, but is not going to make any sales. That means that #9 and #10 will stay empty -- EXCEPT -- you come back from your visit and you make a couple more sales. Well, those sales have to fall somewhere in your organization -- the first open spot is under that mother, #4 -- so your sales fall under her and she now has a downline created from what is called "spill". You already had your own first and second levels full, so your new sales "spilled over" into the next level, and thus helped that gal who had not made any sales.

Hopefully she will be excited to get a commission check, plus she will like the products, and will talk to a few friends and make a sale without really trying. That is the perfect scenario .

I hope this illustrates how you fill a matrix by your own sales, and sales your group make. As time goes on and you and your downline are making sales, your personal group just keeps growing, and so does your income.
